Today, many people associate the Weimar Republic with the glittering world of the “Golden Twenties.” In reality, however, most people initially experienced political upheaval, unemployment, and hunger after the First World War.
The city of Nuremberg launches the largest job creation programs in the entire German Reich. To employ job seekers and provide for the needy, it has 2,000 unemployed people transform almost the entire Langwasser area into large potato and grain fields. The produce reaches those in need through municipal welfare institutions.
Small potatoes serve as feed for more than 200 pigs, fattened at a municipal farm built in the middle of the fields.
