5. Reich Party Congresses: Reich Party Congresses and SA Camp (1933 – 1938)

From green field to tent city
From 1933 to 1938, the Nazi Reich Party Congresses take place in Nuremberg. In addition to large parade grounds and monumental buildings, huge camp zones are built in Langwasser for hundreds of thousands of participants from the SA, SS, HJ, and other Nazi organizations.

Streets, permanent buildings, sewage systems, and a new railway network with the “camp station” Märzfeld massively transform the Langwasser landscape. The SA camp, expanded in 1936/37, occupies the largest area. It is essentially a small town with permanent supply barracks, a commandant’s office with a watchtower at the central Horst-Wessel-Platz, and large tents.

Up to 100,000 participants camped there. Life in the camp was organized militarily and formed an important part of the Reich Party Congress experience for many.
