1. Introduction: “Historical Core Sample” as a Time Column

Welcome to a journey through time into the history of the Nuremberg district of Langwasser. The aerial photograph at the top shows our location in the southern part.

Langwasser has an exceptionally interesting history. German twentieth-century history is reflected here like almost nowhere else in Germany. The historical core sample is intended to demonstrate this.

We begin our journey in the middle of the Reichswald, where a small bridge called the Kuhbrücklein once crossed a stream. Before we arrive in the Reichswald, however, we will encounter a wide variety of people and events. These are important to national—and in some cases even international—history.
